TONGUE DEPRESSOR

(New Haven, CT)

Tongue Depressor is the New Haven-based duo of Henry Birdsey (fiddle, lap steel) and Zach Rowden (fiddle, upright bass, electronics). They write, improvise, and perform music that draws from the fields of drone, harsh noise, and church music, often using microtonal tunings. Recent projects and releases include Burnish (XKatedral), Tilting Irons (Redscroll), and Volume 7 of their Fiddle Music series.

J.Guy Laughlin & Bbob Drake duo

(Clevelend, OH)

J. Guy Laughlin (drums/percussion) and bbob drake (electronics/objects) have been creating freely improvised music together since 2009.  Their work is exploratory and explosive, nuanced and ecstatic - always energetic, but always with a focus on hear-and-now interplay and collaboration.  They have released three recordings as a duo: Liminality (2018), Curiouser (2013), and Regeneration (2009), available at http://www.fluxmonkey.com/fluxmerch_sound.htm.  They also have a trio project, Baekdudaegan, with saxophonist Alex Henry.


Over the years, they’ve shared the stage with many performers coming thru Cleveland, including Paul Flaherty/Zach Rowden, Jack Wright, Robert Turman, Wasteland Jazz Unit, Burning Star Core, Pedestrian Deposit, Eugene Chadbourne, eli keszler, Tashi Dorji/Thom Nguyen, James McKain, C.Lavendar, Lea Bertucci, William Hooker Trio, and Boneshaker.   


J. Guy has played in a variety of Ohio and Chicago bands, including Dead Peasant Insurance, Fire Death, and Puffy Areolas, and often collaborates with Philly saxophonist James McKain.  He is a drum instructor, and recently completed a year-long intensive study of traditional Gamelan performance at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Denpasar, Bali.


bbob builds as well as plays electronics and electro-acoustic instruments, under the project name FluxMonkey.  At one point, he completed a 5-year luthier apprenticeship with violin maker Peter Horn, but most recently has been working as a pipe organ tuner/technician.  He also teaches sound art and electronics at the Cleveland Institute of Art. 

VIRUSSE

(Providence, RI)

Virusse is the electronic project of Mindy Stock. She is an herbalist and shamanic practitioner. She uses electronics to make her music. Her tracks bring a taste of ambient and soft techno/noise with a unique personal touch.
